So many of them, every single day. Questions that wander through our minds and leave us wondering exactly what the heck a thing is, and how we can’t know the answer to that already. I mean, what kind of idiot doesn’t know this seemingly common piece of knowledge?

Trust us, we do it all the time, and more often than not we find out we’re not exactly alone in having questions we want to ask, but sound incredibly stupid. Ask A Stupid Question Day comes to the rescue, giving us an excuse to ask all the questions we want the answers too, and even some of those that are just waiting to be whispered with a slightly sarcastic tone.

Like “So tell me, what if the Hokey Pokey really is what it’s all about?”

But Why Ask A Stupid Question?

There are lots of reasons for asking stupid questions, not the least of which is finding out that perhaps our question isn’t nearly as stupid as we actually feared. Sometimes the answer is so surprisingly different from what we expected that we learn something new. Things like “Do potatoes have seeds?” As it turns out, they do! But most cultivating takes place from chunks of potato sown into the soil.

Stupid questions have often been the source of inspiration for a new discovery, a new line of research, or just an expansion in the realm of creative or contemplative thought. After all, isn’t the question “What is the sound of one hand clapping?” kind of a stupid question? Or for those who understand physics and sound waves “When a tree falls over and there’s noone around to hear it, does it make a sound?” The question causes us to wonder about the nature of sound, after all, while sounds are technically vibrations, are they truly a ‘sound’ as we think of them until are ‘heard’ by something that can interpret them?

Another great stupid question is “Is a deviled egg one half of an egg, or two halves of an egg?” That one is a topic of fun debate that will keep you talking for hours. Such is the glory of the stupid question, encouraging us to think about our world in new ways, or to explore things that we think are completely obvious, but may contain deeper mysteries than we thought. Ask A Stupid Question Day encourages you to explore your world through questions about the obvious.
