Another week, another few dollar-pounds, another 7+ weird and wonderful occasions to become involved in…
What kind of state is your desktop in? Biscuit crumbs around the space bar, ignored paperwork from two years ago, Happy Meal toys scattered haphazardly and dry coffee rings forming an elaborate Venn diagram? Chill, it’s all good in the hood because Monday 21st October is Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day, so as long as your folders are alphabetised, your icons are properly arranged and your recycling bin is empty, you can have an iguana living in your filing cabinet for all we care! Actually, that would be quite apt, as it’s Reptile Awareness Day too.
TUESDAY 22ND OCTOBER IS CAPS LOCK DAY! YOU DON’T HAVE TO END EVERY SENTENCE WITH AN EXCLAMATION MARK BUT YOU MIGHT AS WELL! WHY NOT SEND YOUR BOSS AN INOFFENSIVE EMAIL AND SEE WHETHER THEY TAKE IT AS A PERSONAL AFFRONT SIMPLY DUE TO ITS APPARENT AGGRESSION?! GRAAAARRRRRRRRR!!!
iPod Day is when we all turn into silhouettes and dance pretentiously to a little-known indie track that subsequently goes mainstream and is played at everything from the Oscars to the opening of a bag of crisps. Mole Day, also falling on Wednesday 23rd October, pays tribute to those cute (albeit occasionally irritating) subterranean garden explorers. Seeing how the occasion won’t arise for another year, I’m going to take the liberty of plugging a local company called Mr Mole Blankets – check out their Twitter account for all kinds of kids/parents/family themed updates. Moley moley moley!
The United Nations is an international organisation founded by 51 countries in 1945, following the Second World War. There are now 193 countries that hold membership, each of them uniting under the shared mission of ‘maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights’. More can be found out about the UN here, and what better day to do so than on Thursday 24th October, United Nations Day.
There are quite a few occasions listed on this website that encourage us to be positive, take a deep breath and look on the bright side of life. Not on Friday 25th October! Sourest Day is an excuse to be a grumpy, cynical, belligerent sourpuss. And you’ll get away with it too because those meddling kids will be grounded for the day.
Is there a full moon tonight? No? Never mind; whether it’s a waxing gibbous or a total eclipse, Howl At The Moon Day on Saturday 26th October means you can release your inner wolf regardless. Just make sure to warn the neighbours beforehand, either that or get them to join you.
Navy Day and Mother-In-Law Day both take place on Sunday 27th October. It’s a time to pay respect to those who work at sea and protect the watery borders of whichever country you call home, whilst also paying tribute to your husband or wife’s mum. Why not combine the two and sign up dear old mother-in-law to a life at sea? Everybody wins!
Thanks for reading. Now go seize the day!
