In this turbulent economy, working overtime can sometimes become a necessity for people to pay bills to keep a roof over their heads and food on a table. However, too much overtime for longer periods of time can be disastrous to your health, and if that work is unpaid, then it’s even worse for your living situation.

So, Work Your Proper Hours Day is a day that reminds people to take it easy every once in a while and make sure that employees can enjoy their time at work instead of struggle physically and mentally to get by.

History of Work Your Proper Hours Day

Work Your Proper Hours Day is all about giving the average worker the ability to stop working overtime for free and start earning for themselves. Created by workSMART, a website founded by the Trades Union Congress in the United Kingdom, this holiday is about convincing workers to work their proper hours so they can spend time with friends and family, and if they need the money, then get paid for the extra time they take in their job. According to workSMART, five million people at work in the UK regularly do unpaid overtime, putting in about 7.7 hours of work that is above their normal work hours and causing workers to lose £31.2 billion of work in payment, which as a result end up to their employers.

While most people don’t mind working a few extra hours, the TUC argues that working overtime extensively for a long period of time can increase health risks, including increased depression, stress, and heart disease. TUC also argues that it’s not good for employers because of the risk of mistakes and inefficiency in the workplace. So, WYPH day takes the initiative to convince chief executives, managers, and employees to leave at their proper hours and take care of themselves.

How to Celebrate Work Your Proper Hours Day

During your work hours, try to take a proper lunch break and leave on time. If you are a manager of a company or higher up, then instill a program for your employees about health and work hours to help employees be happier in the workplace. Bring in a conversation with your co-workers about this topic and advertise this holiday on your company and personal social media websites using the hashtag #WorkYourProperHoursDay. If you can’t plan for this idea immediately, put it in your planner ahead of time as a reminder to start caring about the hours your employees work, or rather yourself.
