The Global Days of Action on Military Spending is a lively global campaign that invites people everywhere to rethink how public funds are used.

It urges governments to shift resources from arms to real security, like health, education, and clean energy.

When new military spending data arrives, advocates use the moment to spark conversations. They call for cuts and reallocation of budgets to improve everyday lives.

This campaign paints a clear story. Billions poured into weapons could instead build schools, fight poverty, and protect the planet.

Each voice adds color, showing how military budgets can hurt society and the climate.

People unite with art, facts, and events to ask leaders for change. The shared energy builds momentum around a simple truth: true security comes from caring for people, not weapons.

How to Celebrate Global Days of Action on Military Spending

Here are some creative ideas to mark the Global Days of Action on Military Spending with energy and purpose:

Host a Budget Swap Exhibit

Invite guests to display household or community budgets next to national military spending data. This visual sparks fresh conversation.

Participants learn how reallocated funds could boost schools, hospitals, or green energy.

Launch a Social Media Campaign

Post eye‑catching infographics that compare weapon costs to public programs. Set a fun daily challenge—like sharing one surprising military-spending fact each day using a unique hashtag.

Organize a Virtual Discussion

Set up a relaxed online chat with experts, students, and friends. Focus on meaningful questions—like how peace investments improve lives. Keep it short and engaging for a lively feel.

Create a Poet‑Art Jam

Gather artists and writers to blend words, music, and visuals. Encourage themes that challenge militarism and celebrate human potential. Then share the creations online or in a public space.

Write a Letter‑to‑the‑Editor Blitz

Encourage people to send letters to newspapers and local media editors. Ask them to challenge the norms that promote huge military budgets and suggest investing in welfare and climate action.

History of Global Days of Action on Military Spending

The Global Days of Action on Military Spending began in April 2016. Organizers planned it to match the release of new global military spending data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

That yearly update often lands in early April. Activists used this moment to spark debate. They asked a simple but bold question: What if that money funded public services instead?

The campaign ran through mid-April, ending near U.S. Tax Day. That date helped connect national budgets with personal taxes.

Around the world, people joined events to demand better use of public money. Some staged performances or held public talks. Others gathered in town squares, online forums, or classrooms.

The International Peace Bureau (IPB), a long-standing peace group, helped launch the idea. In 2014, it created the Global Campaign on Military Spending (GCOMS).

That effort expanded into an annual week of action. GCOMS called on people everywhere to push for less spending on weapons and more on human needs.

Since then, support has grown. Activists in dozens of countries now take part each year. These events have one shared goal—shifting priorities away from war and toward care, justice, and a safe future for all.
