Katy Perry's birthday
American singer and songwriter Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson was born October 25th, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California, but is best known professionally as Katy Perry. Growing up in a religious household, Katy primarily listened to gospel music, while also listening to mainstream pop music thanks to her friends. She started singing at the age of nine, taking vocal lessons, and sang in church up until she turned seventeen. Katy got her first guitar at 13 and began to perform her songs in public. Her ambition to have a music career led her to finish high school early, at the age of fifteen.
Katy released her first album, Katy Hudson, in 2001. The album’s musical style was mainly Christian rock. That same year, Katy went on tour as part of Phil Joel’s Strangely Normal Tour, who also played Christian rock. Her first record wasn’t successful, and Katy soon transitioned into secular music, and changed her name to “Katy Perry” to avoid getting confused with other artists. After several false starts with various record labels, Katy got her breakthrough moment when One of the Boys premiered in 2008 under Capitol Records. The record’s first single, “I Kissed a Girl,” quickly reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The single was followed by other top ranking songs, “Hot n Cold,” “Thinking of You,” and “Waking Up in Vegas.” The album was very successful, even though it garnered mixed reviews, selling seven million copies worldwide and earning Katy two Grammy Award nominations.
In 2009, Katy embarked on her first world tour, the Hello Katy Tour, to promote her second album. A third record, called Teenage Dream (2010,) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The album contained five commercially successful singles “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “E.T.,” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” although it got mixed reviews and didn’t perform as well as its predecessor. Nonetheless, the record made Katy the first female artist to achieve five number-one Billboard Hot 100 songs from one album. In February 2012, Capitol Records reissued Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, introducing a new single, “Part of Me,” which also became number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Aside from her music career, Katy has also appeared in various television shows, amongst them, Sesame Street, Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, and in an episode of sitcom How I Met Your Mother, which earned her a People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Guest Star. In 2011, she debuted on the big screen in the 3D live-action film The Smurfs. The following year, Katy later guest starred in the sitcom Raising Hope and released an autobiographical documentary, Katy Perry: Part of Me.
Katy’s fourth studio album, Prism, which came out in 2013, was a big hit, selling over four million copies and earning positive feedback from the critics. She subsequently released two more albums, Witness (2017) and Smile (2020.) Since December 2021, Katy Perry has been hosting a concert residency, titled Play, in Las Vegas, which was met with critical and commercial success.
