History of International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists
The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists began in 2011. IFEX, a global network that defends free expression, launched it.
They picked November 23 to remember the Ampatuan massacre in the Philippines.
In that attack, 57 people died—32 of them were journalists. It was one of the deadliest events for media workers in history. The tragedy showed how dangerous it can be to report the news, especially in areas with weak legal systems.
In 2013, the United Nations stepped in. The General Assembly passed a resolution to support the day and moved its official date to November 2.
