To build awareness, create safe and healthy work environments, ‘normalize’ relationships, and allow lesbian voices to be heard, Lesbian Visibility Week provides various opportunities to build a society of inclusion.

This event works to promote LGBTQIA women along with non-binary people in every field, from every generation, to every country around the globe.

History of Lesbian Visibility Week

Lesbian Visibility Week was first celebrated in 1990 when it originated in West Hollywood, California. The event was coordinated through the efforts of the West Hollywood Lesbian Visibility Committee, which was founded the previous year.

The event started as a week filled with programmed activities and workshops to improve public awareness about lesbian identities and concerns.

Celebrated at the end of April, this week is coordinated to coincide with Lesbian Visiblity Day, which takes place on April 26. Lesbian Visibility Day was formed in 2008 through the efforts of American activist Amy Ellis.

She promoted the day within the community to honor lesbian visibility and create a safe space for all women who are queer.

WIth one community and so many brilliant individuals, Lesbian Visibility Week promotes this community on a truly iconic and global stage!

  • Overall in LGBTQ+ employee networks, lesbian women and non-binary women are usually less likely to achieve visibility than men who are gay
  • One survey has shown that approximately ¼ of lesbian women reported that they feel uncomfortable discussing their personal lives, in comparison with 10% of women overall
  • The intersection of lesbian and non-binary people sits in a space that is often overlooked by society in general as well as people in the workplace
  • The lack of visibility of lesbians acts as a barrier to attracting more LGBTQ+ women into the industry
