National Foster Care Day
National Foster Care Day brings attention to the lives of children who enter foster care through no fault of their own. Each child carries a different story—some filled with sudden change, others shaped by years of uncertainty.
Foster care steps in as a temporary home when families face serious difficulties. While the goal is safety and support, the system often stretches thin.
That’s where the day comes in. It speaks for children who can’t always speak for themselves and reminds people that every child deserves care, respect, and a chance to feel secure.
The day also highlights the people who open their homes to help. Foster parents, social workers, and volunteers play big roles in creating stability. But even with their efforts, more help is needed.
The number of children entering the system keeps growing. More families, more resources, and more kindness can make a real difference.
National Foster Care Day calls on all of us to notice these needs—and act, even in small ways, to support kids who deserve better days ahead.
How to Celebrate National Foster Care Day
National Foster Care Day offers numerous opportunities to support and uplift children in the foster system. Here are several meaningful ways to get involved:
Become a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)
Volunteer to represent the best interests of children in court. CASAs play a crucial role in ensuring that each child’s voice is heard during legal proceedings.
Offer Respite Care for Foster Families
Provide temporary relief to foster parents by caring for children during short-term periods. This support allows caregivers to rest and recharge, benefiting both them and the children.
Donate Essential Items to Foster Care Organizations
Contribute necessities like clothing, school supplies, or hygiene products to local foster care agencies. These donations directly assist children in meeting their daily needs.
Host a Fundraiser to Support Foster Youth
Organize events such as bake sales, charity runs, or online campaigns to raise funds for foster care programs. Financial contributions help provide resources and opportunities for these children.
Mentor a Child in Foster Care
Offer guidance and support by becoming a mentor. Positive role models can significantly impact a child’s development and self-esteem.
Educate Your Community About Foster Care
Share information through social media, community events, or local workshops. Raising awareness fosters understanding and encourages others to get involved.
Consider Becoming a Foster Parent
Open your home to a child in need by exploring the process of becoming a licensed foster parent. Providing a stable and loving environment can profoundly change a child’s life.
History of National Foster Care Day
National Foster Care Day began in 2017 through the efforts of the Ticket to Dream Foundation and a group called Project Blue. They wanted to shine a light on the needs of children living in foster care.
Many of these kids move between homes, often with very little to call their own. The day brings attention to that reality and calls on people to care, speak up, and act.
The founders didn’t work alone. They partnered with brands, businesses, and communities to help spread the word.
Their goal was simple: raise awareness, gather support, and bring hope. While the foster care system has long existed, this specific day gave it a stronger voice. It created space for open conversations and real change.
Project Blue also played a key part. It’s a national movement that uses the color blue to stand for foster youth. Wearing blue on this day became a sign of support and a way to stand in solidarity with children who often feel invisible. Since then, more people have joined in every year.
National Foster Care Day continues to grow, reminding us that small efforts can make a big difference for kids who deserve better.
