History of National Prepareathon! Day
In 2013, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) introduced America’s PrepareAthon! to promote readiness for unexpected disasters. The goal was simple: encourage individuals, families, and communities to take proactive steps toward safety.
This effort aimed to shift emergency preparedness from a distant thought to an everyday priority. Hands-on activities like drills, evacuation planning, and communication exercises became a core part of the movement.
Recognizing its importance, President Barack Obama declared April 30 as National PrepareAthon! Day in 2014. This official designation gave the initiative greater visibility, motivating more people to get involved.
Instead of waiting for emergencies, this day urges action before crises strike. The idea is to reduce risks, increase awareness, and ensure that when disasters occur, individuals know exactly what to do.
Schools, businesses, and local governments participate by holding events, sharing resources, and encouraging residents to create emergency plans.
The movement continues to evolve, inspiring more people to take safety into their own hands. When entire communities commit to preparation, everyone benefits. National PrepareAthon! Day
