National Salsa Month
Often eaten as an appetizer or side dish accompanying delicious Tex-Mex meals, salsa brings a wide range of flavors and spice to what could be an otherwise boring meal.
National Salsa Month is here to celebrate this delightful little sauce that might be somewhat unassuming most of the year but, during this month, it is the star of the show!
How to Celebrate National Salsa Month
Looking for ideas to celebrate and enjoy National Salsa Month? Get started with a few of these plans or get creative on your own:
Be Sure to Eat Salsa
With its classic buddy, chips, salsa can be a delightful little snack on its own or it can be part of a much larger spread of a meal.
Not only is it good for dipping, it’s also excellent when spread on top of a burrito, added to grilled meats, or eaten with tacos.
Some people even like to put salsa on their scrambled eggs or eat it with an omelet. The options are almost endless when it comes to eating salsa for the full 31 days that are celebrated during this month!
Try Making Salsa
While there are certainly some tasty versions of salsa that can be purchased at a local grocery store or picked up from a restaurant, perhaps this month is just the time to mix up some fresh batches of salsa at home!
Salsa is actually fairly simple to make, including a few main ingredients such as tomatoes, onions, cilantro, garlic, lime or lemon juice and other seasonings.
Some folks like their salsa chunky while others prefer to put it in a blender for a smoother texture. Mix up a batch to enjoy on your own or share with friends during National Salsa Month.
Enjoy Salsa Dancing
Sure, this event may have been founded with a southwestern food in mind, but that doesn’t mean it can’t take on other iterations! Get on board with National Salsa Month by enjoying and appreciating all sorts of salsa, including the dance variety.
Listen to Salsa Music
Not so much of a dancer? That’s okay! It’s still great to listen to some of this spicy Salsa music that hails from Latin America.
As a mix of Cuban, Puerto Rican and American styles, the vibe of this music offers a delightful accompaniment to any activity all throughout National Salsa Month.
History of National Salsa Month
National Salsa Month got its start in 1997 when it was founded by the Pace Salsa company with an eye on celebrating their origins. In fact, this event took place in honor of the 50th birthday of the company in 1947.
Of course, to get to the real history of National Salsa Month, it helps to go back even further, to the Aztecs, Incas and Mayans.
But the more recent versions of modern salsa as a table dip were popularized by Mexican restaurants in the US around the 1980s.
