NHS Domestic Abuse Awareness Day
Every year, countless individuals experience domestic abuse; yet for many, the silence surrounding it can feel overwhelming. Within the caring profession of the NHS, that silence can be even heavier. Research shows that healthcare professionals are three times more likely to face domestic abuse than the general UK population, a stark reminder that those who care for others often need care and protection themselves.
Founded by Ellen Welch and Sarah Jacques, and launched by the Medical Women’s Federation and the Doctors’ Association UK, NHS Domestic Abuse Awareness Day shines a light on this urgent issue. Held every December 10, it marks the close of the global 16 Days of Activism, which begins on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. By aligning with this international movement, the day helps amplify global calls to end violence while focusing attention on the unique needs of NHS staff.
This day of awareness encourages open conversations, compassion, and action. It acknowledges the scale of the problem within one of the world’s largest workforces and highlights the essential resources available to help staff members experiencing domestic abuse. From specialist support services to confidential reporting pathways, the aim is to ensure that no one within the NHS feels alone.
NHS Domestic Abuse Awareness Day also reminds us that a caring profession must care for its people. Whether by raising awareness, sharing information, or simply checking in on colleagues, everyone has a role to play in creating a safer, more supportive workplace, thereby offering a powerful opportunity to stand together, break the silence, and build a culture where every NHS worker feels seen, valued, and safe.
