In the vast expanses of rural America, the hum of a transit bus is more than just a sound—it’s a lifeline. Connecting people to essential services, jobs, education, and community events, rural transit plays a vital role in maintaining the quality of life for those who call these areas home. It’s a symbol of community spirit, resilience, and the determination to overcome geographical challenges. To honor this crucial service, we celebrate Rural Transit Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the importance of rural transit and the people who make it possible.

History of Rural Transit Day

The National Rural Transit Assistance Program (National RTAP) established Rural Transit Day in 2019. This special day was created to highlight the work of transit agencies in recognizing passengers and staff, and to bring attention to the unique challenges and opportunities that rural transit presents. It’s a day that underscores the importance of rural transit in connecting communities, fostering economic development, and enhancing quality of life.

The roots of rural transit trace back to 1979 when the Federal Transit Administration began providing funds to establish and maintain transit systems in communities with populations under 50,000. This initiative was a recognition of the essential role that transit plays in rural communities, providing vital links to healthcare, employment, education, and social activities.

Recognizing the need for specialized skills and knowledge in this sector, Congress authorized the creation of National RTAP in 1986. Since then, National RTAP has been instrumental in developing training materials, providing technical assistance, conducting research, and offering peer assistance for rural and tribal transit providers. It’s a testament to the ongoing commitment to improving and sustaining rural transit systems across the country.

How to Celebrate Rural Transit Day

Celebrating Rural Transit Day is a chance to appreciate the hard work of transit agencies and their staff, and to reflect on the benefits and challenges of rural transit. Here are some ways you can participate:

  1. Join the Conversation: Each year, a #RuralTransitDay Twitter Chat is hosted where participants share thoughts about the benefits of rural transit, along with challenges and solutions. It’s a vibrant and insightful conversation that brings together transit professionals, passengers, and advocates from across the country. Join the chat and share your thoughts.
  2. Take the Pledge: If you’re part of a transit agency, take the Rural Transit Day Pledge to show your commitment to rural transit. The pledge emphasizes the importance of understanding passengers’ needs, providing them with equal, respectful, and helpful service, and involving them in service planning. It’s a powerful statement of your agency’s commitment to serving your community.
  3. Recognize Your Heroes: Use Rural Transit Day to recognize the heroes in your agency. These are the people who go above and beyond to ensure that rural transit services are safe, reliable, and accessible. Download a Rural Transit Day Hero card, personalize it with a photo and information about your hero, and share it with them. It’s a small gesture that can make a big difference.
  4. Spread the Word: Use the hashtag #RuralTransitDay on social media to spread awareness about the day and the importance of rural transit. Share stories, photos, and experiences that highlight the impact of rural transit in your community.
