World Alternative Games
The World Alternative Games is where sports get wonderfully weird. Held in a Welsh town that loves a laugh, it turns the idea of competition on its head.
You won’t find tennis or football here. Instead, people hurl wellies, belly-flop into bogs, and race while carrying full-grown adults.
There’s cheese rolling, stone skimming, and even office chair racing. It’s part sporting event, part comedy show—except everyone’s in on the joke.
The whole day feels like a village fair that got out of hand in the best way. Dogs bark, kids yell, grown-ups wobble through obstacle courses with socks on their heads. Judges use stopwatches and sometimes teacups.
One minute you’re watching someone throw a toilet seat for distance, the next you’re in a three-legged sprint with a total stranger. It’s the kind of day where nobody’s keeping score, but everyone’s winning anyway.
How to Celebrate the World Alternative Games
Here are some fun ways to mark the World Alternative Games spirit:
Host Quirky Backyard Competitions
Invite friends to try odd contests like wheelbarrow races or toilet-seat tosses. Provide simple prizes like funny hats or snack coupons to boost the mood.
Everyone gets involved, and the silliness brings laughter.
Organize a Mini Bog Dive
Find a small, safe mud patch or build one with water and dirt. Let guests enjoy a quick plunge, splash, and cheer.
This messy twist mirrors the real event’s wild energy.
Plan a Costume Challenge
Ask participants to dress up in odd attire—think socks on heads or mismatched shoes. Award titles like “Most Ridiculous Racer” or “Bog King/Queen.” This playful twist brings extra joy.
Set Up Creative Relay Races
Combine tasks like carrying buckets, hopping sideways, or balancing items. Make teams and cheer each other on. Mixing tasks encourages teamwork and goofy competition.
Stage a Welly Hurling Contest
Give everyone a chance to throw boots for distance. Mark throwing zones and measure flights. Guests of all ages enjoy testing aim and strength.
Host a DIY “Wife”-Carrying Race
Pair people up and have one carry the other through a short course. Use cushions or dolls for safety and fun. Supporters cheer, and the results are hilarious.
History of World Alternative Games
The World Alternative Games began in 2012 in Llanwrtyd Wells, a tiny town in Powys, Wales. Locals, already known for wild events like bog snorkeling, came up with the idea.
They wanted to create a playful alternative to serious sports. A small team of organizers built the first games from scratch.
They added offbeat challenges like wife‑carrying, hay bale tossing, worm charming, and bathtub racing. Around 35 quirky contests filled the schedule that first year.
The event welcomed anyone willing to try something different. People didn’t need skill, just a sense of fun. Crowds grew quickly as word spread. The idea caught on in other places, too.
More spectators arrived each time. Organizers kept the tone silly and light-hearted. Volunteers ran the show. No big sponsors, no high-pressure rules—just joyful chaos in open fields.
Held every two years, the games kept expanding. New contests joined the list. The community stayed at the heart of it all. Visitors from around the world came to watch and compete.
Every player got a wooden medal for joining, not for winning. That message stuck. It turned the event into something more than just games. It became a celebration of fun, friendship, and good humor.
