Born October 21, 1980, in Los Angeles, California, Kimberly Noel Kardashian is an American media personality, socialite, and businesswoman. She is the second of four children born to Robert and Kris Kardashian, and she has two half-sisters from her mother’s second marriage. Although Kim was no stranger to the spotlight, due to her father’s heavily publicized court case where he was a lawyer on O.J. Simpson’s murder trial, she first started to gain attention when she worked in her early twenties as Paris Hilton’s stylist (with whom she had gone to school,) even appearing in the heiress’ reality TV show.
In 2003, Kim was working as a personal stylist for actress and singer Brandy, later becoming Paris Hilton’s stylist and assistant. She got a lot of attention from the paparazzi while working for her friend, but it wouldn’t be until 2007, when Kim gained notoriety for the release of a sex tape that she had made with her then-boyfriend in 2003, Ray J (Brandy’s brother.) A year before, Kim and her sisters, Kourtney and Khloé, had opened a boutique shop in Calabasas, California, called D-A-S-H, which marked the first of her entrepreneurial ventures.
In October 2007, Kim and her family began to star in television reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which ran successfully for twenty seasons up until 2021. The reality show spawned numerous spinoffs too, among them Kourtney and Kim Take Miami (2009-2013) and Kourtney and Kim Take New York (2011-2012.) Kardashian also served as producer for one of the many spin-offs, The Spin Crowd (2010). A new spin-off show, The Kardashians, premiered in 2022 on Hulu, and it’s currently on its second season. Kim also made several television and film appearances, beginning with Disaster Movie (2008,) followed by Dancing with the Stars, How I Met Your Mother, Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (2013,) CSI: NY, 90210, The Apprentice, American Dad!, and Ocean’s 8 (2018.)
Kim has several business ventures: in 2017, she launched her own beauty and fragrance lines, KKW Beauty and KKW Fragrance respectively, and in 2019, she founded a new type of shapewear called “Kimono,” later named Skims, to promote body positivity and size inclusion. In 2022, Kim founded a private equity firm called SKKY Partners, in which her mother also participates. On social media, Kim has been extremely successful by earning money through her posts endorsing brands and beauty products. As of April 2022, Kim Kardashian’s net worth is estimated to be around US$1.8 billion.
