Never on the rocks

Lighthouse Day? I can do one better than a lighthouse – Hull has its own lightship!

“What’s that?” I hear you ask. “A ship that’s a light? Sounds like hocus pocus to me.” Well fear not, friend, for this is a genuine manmade creation that sits quietly in Hull Marina and is called the Spurn Lightship (look at that, it even has its own Wikipedia entry).

Built in 1927, it’s acted as a free museum since 1987. However, I can’t remember the last time I went on board. There’s a chance I’ve tried and failed due to wearing rollerblades or high heels, but such an occasion doesn’t spring to mind. Whatever the case, it’s great to have a decommissioned but well-kept lightship in the heart of the city. And if I ever win the lottery, I’d love to relocate it to my grounds, hook it up to motion sensors and have it temporarily blind trespassers, giving me just enough time to whack them square in the face with the anchor.
