More About the Holiday

Her story began in 1717 when three fishermen struggling to catch anything pulled a statue of the Virgin Mary from the Paraiba River. Soon after, their nets miraculously filled with fish.

This unexpected event marked the beginning of widespread devotion to her, and her image has become a powerful symbol of faith and hope for millions of Brazilians.

Today, the statue resides in a grand basilica that can accommodate thousands of visitors at a time, reflecting her enduring importance.

The basilica itself is one of the largest in the world, second only to St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. People honor her not just for her religious significance but also for her role in Brazilian identity and history, which transcends boundaries of faith and culture.

History of Our Lady of Aparecida

The story of Our Lady of Aparecida, or Nossa Senhora Aparecida, began in 1717. It all started when three fishermen, Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso, and João Alves, went out to fish in the Paraíba River. They were struggling to catch anything when they pulled up a small, headless statue of the Virgin Mary.

A little later, they found the missing head in the river and put the statue together. After that, they suddenly had an abundant catch of fish. This surprising event marked the beginning of the devotion to Our Lady of Aparecida.

The statue stayed with one of the fishermen’s families for many years. During that time, several miracles were attributed to her. News spread quickly, and people began visiting to pray and seek blessings.

Soon, a small chapel was built to honor her, and this grew over the years into a large basilica, which is now one of the biggest churches in the world. In 1930, Pope Pius XI declared Our Lady of Aparecida the Patroness of Brazil, and since then, she has become a symbol of hope and protection for many Brazilians.

Her statue, only 15 inches tall, stands over a crescent moon with her hands folded in prayer. Although the statue is dark, its color is due to the time it spent underwater and from the soot of candles over the years.

The image’s significance goes beyond its physical appearance; it represents faith and unity for many, especially in Brazil’s African-descended community.

Today, millions of pilgrims visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida every year. They come to honor the Virgin, ask for help, and give thanks for blessings received. The basilica is a major spiritual and cultural destination, showing how this small statue has touched the lives of so many people in Brazil and beyond.
