National Donate Life Month
While the circle of life brings grief and loss when a loved one dies, a person can give one final gift by donating their organs to help someone else.
One individual can provide lifesaving organs for up to eight people when they register to become an organ donor.
National Donate Life Month is here to remind individuals that they are empowered to make decisions about their bodies, encouraging them to consider organ donation as an act of kindness!Â
History of National Donate Life Month
National Donate Life Month started in 2003 when it was founded through the efforts of Donate Life America and its many partner organizations.
The purpose behind this event has been to grow public awareness and increase participation in organ donor programs all throughout the United States.
For more than two decades, National Donate Life Month has been sharing the message of donor participation, promoting the importance of every eligible person to register as a donor for organs, eyes and tissue.
Local, regional, and national activities are scheduled to take place all throughout the month, including a Spirit week that ends with Friday being designated as Blue and Green Day, encouraging participation by promoting the colors of the Donate Life America logo.Â
How to Celebrate National Donate Life Month
Register to be an Organ Donor
The US government houses a database that allows individuals to sign up based on the state they live in. Others may find it easy to sign up through their local DMV when they renew their driver’s license or state id card.
After signing up, a person must discuss their wishes with their family members, making it clear that they want their organs to go to help others after they are gone.Â
Learn More About Organ Donation
Those who have questions or concerns about organ donation can be more informed and educated by accessing resources, whether online through the US government, at a Donate Life America branch or another trustworthy organization that offers answers to FAQs.
Promote Donate Life Month
Individuals, families and groups can all use their voices and influence for a noble cause by standing up during National Donate Life Month.
Those whose families have benefitted from organ donation can tell their stories at public events or through social media connections.Â
Host National Donate Life Month Events
Universities, medical centers, businesses and other groups of concerned citizens might choose to participate in National Donate Life Month by sponsoring and organizing events that educate the public and encourage people to register as organ donors.
Wear Blue and Green
Take a quick peek at the Donate Life logo and then dress accordingly in celebration of National Donate Life Month! Blue and green are the main colors of the logo, with blue representing the sky and green the earth.
The swirl inbetween the two colors represents the circle of life as offered through organ donation. Wear blue and green throughout this month to give a nod to the Donate Life logo.Â
Other related Days of the Year events that take place throughout the year include National Minority Donor in August, National Organ Donor Day in February, and National Transplant Week in July.   Â
