History of National German Shepherd Day
National German Shepherd Day is a yearly event that honors one of the world’s most respected dog breeds. It started in 2011 thanks to Ingrid Birch, a devoted German Shepherd owner.
She created the day to remember her dog, Peter George de Corban. He was not just a pet to her—he was a loyal friend.
After he passed away, Birch wanted to mark his memory in a way that would also recognize the whole breed. She launched the idea through a Facebook page, where fellow dog lovers quickly joined in.
The date, May 10, became the official day to celebrate German Shepherds. It was chosen to match Peter’s birthday. What began as a personal tribute soon spread across communities and countries.
Fans of the breed now use the day to reflect on what makes these dogs special—bravery, loyalty, and intelligence. Many share photos or stories, donate to rescues, or spend extra time with their dogs.
Though the breed’s origin traces back to 1899 in Germany, thanks to Captain Max von Stephanitz, the modern holiday has a very personal beginning.
Birch’s bond with her dog helped spark a tradition that now lives on each year. It reminds people just how much one dog can inspire many.
