National Open The Magic Day
Cracking open a picture book can feel like lifting the lid on a treasure chest. That’s the heart of National Open The Magic Day. It’s all about slowing down, reading aloud, and letting words stir the imagination.
On this day, classrooms, libraries, and living rooms come alive with voices reading stories made to be heard.
People of all ages gather around books, not just to learn, but to laugh, dream, and connect. It turns everyday reading into a shared adventure.
The magic behind it isn’t just in the books—it’s in who’s reading them, and how. This day celebrates the power of spoken stories to bring people closer. It also shines a light on readers who face challenges and encourages patience, kindness, and support.
A good read-aloud moment can lift someone’s spirit or make them feel seen. That’s what makes this day so meaningful—it turns simple stories into something unforgettable.

History of National Open The Magic Day
Courtney Hinshaw, a former teacher and book lover, created National Open The Magic Day to honor the magic of reading aloud. She launched the day in 2021 through her platform, Ramona Recommends.
Her goal was to help more children feel confident with books, especially those who find reading hard. As a child, Courtney faced struggles with dyslexia and auditory processing disorder.
Reading didn’t come easily, but picture books gave her joy and comfort.
That joy stuck with her. As an adult, she wanted others to feel it too. So, she built a space where reading aloud could be exciting, not scary. The idea behind the day is simple—open a book and let the story speak. It’s not just for strong readers. It’s for everyone, especially those who need encouragement and support.
Each year, families, teachers, and librarians use this day to lift up voices, both big and small. It turns regular reading into something special.
Whether in a classroom, on the couch, or in a library corner, National Open The Magic Day reminds people how powerful a picture book can be.
