Serving as a beacon of awareness, remembrance and solidarity, Adoptee Remembrance Day offers an opportunity to create a sacred space to show support for adoptees who have suffered trauma or whose lives have been lost or disrupted.

This collective act of remembrance allows individuals, families and communities to mark the occasion with profound love and respect, while also acknowledging the harsh reality of this challenging topic.

How to Observe Adoptee Remembrance Day

Wear Yellow

The color that has been chosen to represent Adoptee Remembrance Day is yellow, so a great way to show support for the day might be to don a yellow t-shirt, hoodie, socks or some other garment.

Some people might choose to wear a yellow colored ribbon as a nod to the day.

However you choose to express support, be sure to share with others about the reason behind your yellow and invite them to get involved too.

Light a Candle

One way many people choose to acknowledge loss and remembrance is to shine a light for someone.

In honor of Adoptee Remembrance Day, people are encouraged to light a candle. Perhaps choose a yellow candle.

To share the news of the day, you might consider taking a photo of the lit candle and posting it online so others can join in to observe this important day.

Share Your Story

Those who have suffered loss or trauma related to an adoptive situation may want to take this time to share a bit more about their personal experience.

While it might not be for everyone, some people may find that their story of overcoming difficulty or shared pain could be a beacon of hope to someone in a similar situation while offering support and care.

Learn More

Those who are interested in getting more involved with the aspect of international adoptions can learn more by visiting the Adoptees for Justice (A4J) website.

This non-profit organization is working to protect adoptees in the US with legislation and care through the process.

History of Adoptee Remembrance Day

The first observance of this day took place in 2020 when it was founded by Pamela Karanova.

Her heart behind the day was to acknowledge the myriad of grief, loss and trauma that surrounds the process of adoption.

Particularly, Karanova’s desire was to honor adoptees who have been abused, harmed or even died by suicide.

Another aspect of Adoptee Remembrance Day is those international adoptees who have found themselves without citizenship due to failures of adoptive parents, attorneys, adoption agencies and other adults in their lives.

In addition, this day aims to remember and advocate for adoptees who have struggled with mental health, faced incarceration or have had other types of trauma that have left them suffering in silence.

Raising awareness about these issues is an important motivator for observing this day, while providing grieving friends, family and community members with an opportunity to collectively grieve and remember those who have died.
