Some stories are buried deep—hidden by fear, silence, or time. The International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims brings those stories into the light.

It’s about the right to know what really happened when people’s rights were stolen or lives were taken unfairly. This day speaks up when others can’t. It calls on the world to listen, to ask questions, and to face the facts with open eyes and an open heart.

This day also honors those who stood up for others, even when the cost was high. One voice remembered is that of Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero, who defended the poor and paid for it with his life.

By recognizing voices like his, the day reminds us why truth matters. Telling these stories helps restore dignity to those who suffered. More than that, it helps prevent silence from winning again. Truth, once spoken, opens the door to healing and lasting change.

History of International Day For The Right To The Truth Concerning Human Rights Violations And For The Dignity Of Victims

The United Nations created the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims in 2010.

It honors people who have suffered under abuse, and supports the right of every person to know what happened during serious rights violations. The day also remembers those who fought to protect others and spoke out against injustice, even when it put their lives in danger.

One of those people was Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero. He came from El Salvador and defended the poor during a time of violence and fear. He spoke out against unfair killings and mistreatment.

On March 24, 1980, he was shot while leading Mass. The United Nations chose this date for the observance to honor his bravery and his message of truth.

This day reminds the world that truth matters. Without it, healing takes longer, and injustice may continue. Families deserve to know the full story when a loved one disappears or is harmed by those in power.

Governments have a duty to share facts, not hide them. Truth-telling helps prevent future harm. It opens the door for justice and brings dignity to those who lost so much.
