International Sommelier Day
For some wine lovers and students of wine, becoming a sommelier can feel like a dream come true!
To have a position where it’s literally your job to run a wine cellar, choose a wine list, recommend pairings and train staff about wine?
Sure it’s a high calling and there can be a lot of pressure for these folks, but it can also be a great deal of fun. And that’s what International Sommelier Day is all about!
How to Celebrate International Sommelier Day
Enjoy a Glass of Wine
Head on over to a restaurant and see about connecting with a sommelier who can help you find out more about the best wines you might enjoy drinking, whether with your meal or on your own.
While there, why not go ahead and wish them a Happy International Sommelier Day?!
Host a Wine Tasting
Those who know a little bit about wine, even if you’re not an aficionado, might want to celebrate by having a few friends over for an intimate little wine tasting.
Do a bit of research ahead and collect some interesting wines. Don’t forget to offer some tasty cheeses or other pairings to make a delightful evening of it!
Visit a Vineyard or Winery
One excellent way to go about enjoying this important wine based event is by taking a trip to wine country.
Those who live near some vineyards might just make a day of it, others might want to go for a weekend. Still others might head on out to Napa Valley or even the wine regions of France and make a big trip out of it!
Become a Sommelier
While this career path certainly involves a combination of affection for wine and also building some skills through education, it’s something that is attainable for a wide range of people from different backgrounds.
For more information about making a dream come true by becoming a wine expert, check out more from the Court of Masters Sommeliers in California, the Cordon Bleu school in London, or the National Wine School, which offers in person and online training throughout the United States.
These could be great resources to get started on a path to living out your passion for wine!
History of International Sommelier Day
The founding of International Sommelier Day can trace its roots back more than a decade, to 2013, when it was established through the efforts of the Association de la Sommellerie International (ASI).
The date of celebration was chosen as a nod to the founding of this association, which took place on June 3, 1969 in Reims, France.
For more than five decades, this group has been dedicated to bringing together and advocating for sommelier associations across the world.
From improving access to educational resources to promoting the profession, the ASI has connected groups of sommeliers and had an influence on six continents, driving conversation in the industry and improving standards for sommeliers throughout the world.
