National Backflow Prevention Day
Clean water seems like a given—turn the tap, and it flows. But keeping it safe takes more than good plumbing.
That’s where backflow preventers come in. These small devices stop dirty water from sneaking into our drinking supply.
When pressure drops or pipes shift, water can reverse direction. Without a barrier, chemicals or waste could mix with the clean stream.
National Backflow Prevention Day puts a spotlight on the gear—and the people—who stop that from happening.
There’s something comforting about knowing someone’s always watching out for what we can’t see. On this day, folks recognize the workers who install and check these protectors.
They’re the quiet force behind every safe glass of water. Through simple stories and everyday examples, people learn just how much rides on a working valve.
It’s not flashy, but it matters. A tiny tool, a big job—keeping our water clean, one system at a time.
How to Celebrate National Backflow Prevention Day
Here are a few ways to take part in National Backflow Prevention Day. These ideas turn a technical topic into something hands-on and meaningful.
Get a Home Inspection
Hire a licensed plumber to check your backflow preventer. Many people don’t know if they even have one. A quick visit can uncover issues before they grow.
Safe plumbing starts with knowing what’s already in place.
Thank a Technician
Call, message, or post online to appreciate your local plumbing pros. They work hard behind the scenes. Their routine tests and fast fixes keep your water clean.
A simple thank-you means more than you think.
Learn the Basics
Watch a short video or read a quick article about how backflow happens. Choose easy-to-follow guides with clear visuals.
The more people understand, the more likely they are to care. Knowledge helps everyone stay prepared.
Share a Reminder
Post a tip or fun fact on social media. Use humor or a short story to grab attention. Keep it casual but clear.
These messages stick better when they feel real and relatable.
Support School Programs
Donate to plumbing trade schools or student training programs. Some students can’t afford tools or classes.
Helping them helps your entire community. Safe systems need well-trained hands to build and maintain them.
History of National Backflow Prevention Day
National Backflow Prevention Day began in 2021, started by Watts Water Technologies. They wanted to bring attention to the important role of backflow preventers.
These devices keep dirty water from entering clean supplies.
The company chose August 16 to mark a major plumbing disaster in 1933. At the Chicago World’s Fair, a large backflow event caused thousands of people to fall ill.
Nearly 100 people died after staying at hotels where contaminated water had entered the pipes. That tragic mistake led to big changes in plumbing rules across the country.
The day isn’t just about one event—it’s about what we’ve learned since then. Every year, workers install and inspect valves that stop water from flowing the wrong way. National Backflow Prevention Day helps more people understand why this work matters.
It also gives thanks to those who protect our drinking water. Schools, cities, and plumbing companies use the day to teach, train, and raise awareness. The goal is simple: keep water safe for everyone.
Clean water doesn’t stay clean by chance. It takes the quiet work of experts and the support of people who care. That’s why this day continues to grow in meaning each year.
