With an estimated 900 million dogs in the world, it’s obvious that these little pups bring a ton of love and joy into the lives of their human families. Whether black or white, gray or auburn – or brown, of course! – dogs are certainly worth celebrating.

History of National Brown Dog Day

It can be hard to pick a favorite but National Brown Dog Day is here to enjoy and show appreciation for the friendship and support that is shown by these amazing little creatures, particularly the brown ones.

Whether chocolate, brown, or tan, for tens of thousands of years, dogs have been companions for people of all ages. National Brown Dog Day was established in 2021 to honor and celebrate those peppy pooches who come in any shade of brown!

How to Celebrate National Brown Dog Day

On National Brown Dog Day, consider some of these delightful and cuddly ideas for celebrating the day:

Learn More About Brown Dog Breeds

Take advantage of National Brown Dog Day and learn a little bit more about the breeds that are traditionally brown. Here are some of the favorite breeds of brown dogs:

  • Brown Labrador Retriever

With their sad little puppy dog eyes and shiny coats, this medium sized breed, called Chocolate Labs, are working dogs that are friendly, confident and full of affection – particularly when they are socialized from the young puppy stage.

  • Brown Poodle

Curly and fluffy, whether standard or miniature, poodles make good little pets and do well with very active families.

  • Brown Dachshund

This cute little breed of brown dog has German origins, with its long, extended back and short little legs, the dachshund is loyal and intelligent.

  • Brown English Springer Spaniel

Often brown mixed with some white, this breed is a medium sized dog that is smart, loving and friendly. These spaniels are very high energy dogs that need tons of exercise every day.

Adopt a Brown Dog

Perhaps National Brown Dog Day is the perfect time to add a four-legged friend to the family by adopting a brown dog! Pet shelters are always looking for good families to help out by giving a home to a brown dog (and all of the other colored dogs too). Of course, puppies and dogs are for life, so be sure to do some research on breeds and make certain that the particular dog that is adopted fits well into the family.

Watch a Movie About a Brown Dog

In honor of National Brown Dog Day, consider watching one of these fun movies that feature a brown dog:

  • Lady and the Tramp (1955). This Disney animated feature film is a romantic tale featuring Lady, who is an uptown Cocker Spaniel.
  • Scooby Doo (2002). A follow up to the 1970s cartoon, this movie is a live action animated comedy with the titular Great Dane in the lead role.
  • Turner and Hooch (1989). Hooch is the 110 pound French mastiff junkyard dog buddy to the detective, Turner, played by Tom Hanks.
  • Benji (1974 and 2018). This delightful mixed-breed pup gets into all kinds of interesting adventures on the big screen.
