History of National Doorbell Day

National Doorbell Day started in 2017. NuTone, a company known for home gadgets, created the day. They picked Halloween because it’s the noisiest day for doorbells. Trick-or-treaters ring them all night long, making it the perfect fit.

The idea behind the day was to give attention to a small device that plays a big role. Doorbells help us connect. They greet guests, mark deliveries, and bring excitement during events. Most of the time, we don’t think about them—until they ring.

The day also honors J. Ralph Corbett. During the Great Depression, he created a more pleasant-sounding chime.

Before his design, doorbells used harsh buzzers or basic knockers. His new version used musical tones that made home entrances feel more welcoming. His work helped shape the modern doorbell.

NuTone, which once sold Corbett’s chimes, used the day to share this story. They wanted people to remember how one small change made life better. National Doorbell Day isn’t just about fun. It’s a nod to smart ideas and simple joys.

Every ring tells a story—of someone arriving, of something exciting, or just a friendly hello. This day celebrates those moments and the tiny tool that helps them happen.
