History of National Play Outside Day
National Play Outside Day began in 2011. It was started by Aaron Wiggins and his wife, Rachel. They noticed that kids were spending more time indoors and less time being active.
They believed children and families needed a regular reason to step outside. So, they created a day to remind everyone that outdoor play is important and fun.
The idea was simple: go outside and play on the first Saturday of every month. No sign-ups, no cost, no pressure—just play. Word spread quickly. Families, teachers, and communities liked the idea and began to take part. Schools talked about it. Local parks started hosting events. Parents shared it with neighbors.
The message reached more people each year. The day became a habit for many. Children began looking forward to it. Adults found it refreshing too. Over time, it grew from a small idea into something bigger.
National Play Outside Day now encourages people across the country to enjoy fresh air, move their bodies, and connect with others.
The Wigginses wanted to make outdoor play a normal part of life again. And they did. This simple idea has made a big difference—and continues to do so, one playful step at a time.
