The Organic Beer Fest is a celebration of brews made from ingredients grown without the use of synthetic chemicals.

It brings together craft brewers, musicians, food vendors, and sustainability promoters in a relaxed, friendly park setting.

Visitors wander between tents full of organic beer, cider, and mead, tasting styles from crisp lagers to bold IPAs.

Compostable cups, recycling bins with attendants, and discounts for arriving by bike or public transit support the eco-friendly vibe.

Each sip connects visitors to mindful growing practices, making it both fun and meaningful. Brewers take care in each batch, using high‑quality organic malts and hops, so the beer tastes good and aligns with green values.

A day at the Organic Beer Fest leaves a lasting impression. Guests feel part of something bigger while enjoying great beer and sunshine. Joy combines with purpose in every pour.

How to Celebrate the Organic Beer Fest

Here are some fun and practical ways to make the most of an Organic Beer Fest:

Plan a tasting roadmap

Start by checking the festival’s beer list and map ahead of time. Mark the organic breweries or unique styles you want to try.

This lets you taste in a smart order and explore more widely.

Stay fueled and refreshed

Sip water regularly and eat before arriving. Bring a small snack or buy organic food at the site. That keeps you energized and keeps the tasting light.

Talk to brewers and ask questions

Move past basic tasting and ask brewers about their processes or ingredients. That deepens your experience and appreciation.

Start with rare or limited brews

Head to tents with exclusive or hard‑to‑find beers early. Popular brews can sell out fast, so drink those first.

Use small pours and stay mobile

Ask for tiny samples so you can taste many brews without overdoing it. Don’t block lines—move on after tasting.

Take notes and score your favorites

Bring a pen to jot down beer names and your ratings. It helps you remember which brews stood out and which didn’t.

Arrive early or stay late

Beat the crowds by showing up right when the gates open or staying until near closing. That gives you time with less rush

History of the Organic Beer Fest

Craig Nicholls, a passionate Portland brewer, started the Organic Beer Fest in 2003.

He had been working with organic ingredients since the 1990s and wanted to create a space where small breweries using natural methods could be celebrated.

The first event took place in Portland’s Overlook Park and featured only a handful of brewers. Still, the idea stood out. Nicholls focused on more than just beer—he wanted a clean, earth-friendly event.

That meant using compostable cups, cutting down on waste, and encouraging bike or bus travel. His mission attracted a loyal following. Each year, more brewers and visitors came, and the festival quickly grew into one of the largest events of its kind.

By 2013, the event featured over 60 different beers and expanded to four days. That same year, stronger rules were introduced that required organic beer to include certified organic hops, not just malt.

This raised the quality and pushed growers to offer better ingredients. As the festival grew, it continued to push sustainable practices. Other events began copying the zero-waste model.

Nicholls didn’t just create a fun weekend; he helped change how people think about beer. Organic Beer Fest made green brewing more visible, more fun, and more approachable for everyone.
