History of Samaritans Awareness Day

It was founded by British vicar Chad Varah in 1953. Varah, driven by a desire to help people contemplating suicide, started a helpline for individuals needing someone to talk to. This helpline marked the birth of the Samaritans, an organization dedicated to providing 24/7 confidential support.
Chad Varah’s vision for a “999 for the suicidal” took root when he answered the first call on November 2, 1953. Initially, Varah managed the calls himself, but the need for more support became evident quickly.
By February 1954, volunteers were trained to take calls, turning the Samaritans into a robust support network. The name “Samaritans” came from a newspaper article that referred to the service as a “Telephone Good Samaritan,” which helped spread awareness​.
Samaritans Awareness Day is now observed annually to remind people of the continuous availability of help and to encourage reaching out for support.
