History of Silver Star Service Banner Day
Silver Star Service Banner Day honors U.S. military personnel who have been wounded, fallen ill, or died in combat. The Silver Star Families of America (SSFOA), founded in 2004 by Steve and Diana Newton, established this day to recognize these brave individuals.
The SSFOA’s efforts led to the United States Congress passing House Resolution 855 in April 2010, officially designating May 1 as Silver Star Service Banner Day.
The tradition of displaying service banners dates back to World War I. Families would hang blue star banners to signify a loved one serving in the military.
If the service member was wounded or fell ill, silver threads were sewn over the blue star, symbolizing gallantry and hope. This practice faded between the world wars, but then they revived it to honor those who sacrificed for their country.​
