History of Speak Up For Service Day

Speak Up For Service Day began with a strong belief in the power of youth voices. It started in 2003, when the Fargo Lions Club in North Dakota launched a public speaking contest.

The contest gave high school students a stage to talk about community service. It honored Laura Christensen Espejo, a social worker who made a difference in many lives. Her dedication inspired the event’s mission to shine a light on service-minded teens.

As the years passed, the idea grew. More schools and clubs took part. In 2010, the project expanded across North Dakota.

Then in 2014, the Mandan Lions Club helped turn the effort into a national day. Speak Up For Service Day was born—not just as a contest, but as a celebration of young leaders who give back.

This day now helps bring attention to teens who serve their neighborhoods through volunteering, kindness, and action. Their stories encourage others to care, to help, and to speak with purpose. Adults and peers hear real examples of what service can look like.

The goal is simple but powerful: lift up the voices of youth who are helping to shape the future, one action at a time.
