Communities come together to acknowledge the sisters’ unwavering commitment and impact on countless lives.

Events, both online and in-person, allow people to engage with the sisters’ stories and contributions, fostering a sense of gratitude and support.

Reasons for Celebrating Catholic Sisters Week

The week celebrates several key aspects. First, it recognizes the essential role of Catholic sisters in promoting education and healthcare.

They have long been champions of social justice, advocating for the marginalized and voiceless. Additionally, the week encourages young women to consider vocations in religious life, ensuring the legacy of service continues.

Overall, Catholic Sisters Week honors these dedicated women and their profound influence on society.

History of Catholic Sisters Week

Catholic Sisters Week began in March 2014 as part of Women’s History Month. Its purpose is to honor and celebrate the vital contributions of Catholic sisters.

Molly Murphy MacGregor, co-founder of the National Women’s History Project, helped start this celebration. She was inspired by her own experiences with Catholic sisters and aimed to recognize their dedication and service.

In 2019, Communicators for Women Religious (CWR) took over the event’s organization. They renamed it Catholic Sisters Week to highlight its global scope. The week encourages people to honor Catholic sisters through various events and activities.

This celebration aims to raise awareness about the sisters’ missions, which include education, healthcare, social justice, and environmental stewardship.

Additionally, it seeks to inspire young women to consider religious vocations, ensuring the continuation of this important work. By spotlighting the sisters’ contributions, Catholic Sisters Week helps communities appreciate and support these dedicated women.
