Your guide to celebrating November 4 2015

Put both feet on the floor, loosen your jaw and take one slow breath. November 4 can begin that simply. National Stress Awareness Day is a prompt to notice what has been crowding your head, then make a little room around it.

Take a few minutes for deep breathing, with no complicated technique or special equipment involved. Then go for a walk, ride a bike or roll out a mat for gentle yoga. Pick the movement that feels easiest to start, rather than turning relaxation into another assignment with a deadline.

If your thoughts keep circling, write the pressures down in a journal. A messy page is completely acceptable. You can also talk them through with someone you trust. The International Stress Management Association is there when you want to learn more about stress and well-being, but your November 4 plan can stay refreshingly short.

After the walk or writing break, National Candy Day supplies a pleasantly uncomplicated finale. Choose a favorite candy or confection and give it your full attention for a few bites. This is not a tasting exam, so there is nothing to identify besides “yes, that was the right one.”

Leave the ambitious schedule for another date. A breath, a bit of movement, a page of scribbles and one carefully chosen sweet are plenty for November 4.
