This annual wellness observance has been around for many decades, encouraging people to be better informed, knowledgeable, and proactive about good eye care.

Save Your Vision Month is open for anyone to participate in, including eye doctors, vision centers, schools, health groups, and individuals from all over the country!

How to Celebrate Save Your Vision Month

Keep an eye out for good vision health during this event by celebrating Save Your Vision Month with some of these activities:

Make Small Steps Toward Healthy Vision

Many different factors in life can present challenges to healthy eyesight and Save Your Vision Month is here to offer some hot tips for good vision. Consider implementing some of these activities to keep those eyes in top shape:

  • Annual Eye Exam: While people who need glasses or contacts are apt to get eye exams regularly, people who have perfect vision need to have their eyes checked too!
  • Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: With a sedentary lifestyle using computers, it’s important to take a 20-second break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away
  • Check Your Computer Angle: Your computer screen should ideally be about 4-5 inches (from the center of the screen) below eye level
  • Blink More Often: Dry eyes are less likely to be a problem for people who consciously blink more often.

Call Your Eye Doctor

Many people don’t realize how important it is to check with their optometrist when anything feels ‘not quite right’ about their eyes. From imbalanced diabetes to poor contact lens hygiene, from athletic injuries to excessive screen time, eye health can be impacted in several ways.

Notice floaters in your vision suddenly? Experiencing eye pain? Noticing double vision? Having dry eyes? These are just a few of the reasons it is important to call the eye doctor, during Save Your Vision Month or throughout the year!

Host a Save Your Vision Event

Eye care centers, optometrists, ophthalmologists, glasses companies, community health centers, and so many others can celebrate Save Your Vision Month by hosting events and activities that promote healthy eye care.

This might include offering a discount on eye exams or providing free eye screenings at schools or in underserved neighborhoods.

Offer educational events for adults or get the kids involved with activities like downloadable coloring pages.

Access Resources About Eye Health

The National Eye Institute and the Centers for Disease Control are both US government agencies that offer trustworthy information and tips about eye care, eye health, and vision loss prevention. Check out their website for access to helpful educational materials.

History of Save Your Vision Month

Established by the folks at the American Optometric Association (AOA), Save Your Vision Month has been around for a very long time, tracing its history back almost a century, to 1927.

It was at this time that some of the founding members of the AOA were keen to help people learn more about eye health and ways to take care of their eyes appropriately. The more educated the public is about the different aspects of eye care for adults, children and the elderly, the less likely it is that people will lose their vision due to preventable circumstances!
