History of National Hug & High 5 Day
National Hug & High 5 Day began in 2021. David Sylvester, also known as “Big Dave,” created it to spread love and hope. He lost a close friend in the 9/11 tragedy.
That loss pushed him to travel and connect with people in a personal way. Instead of staying silent in pain, he reached out—literally.
He offered hugs and high-fives to strangers around the world. These simple actions made people smile, laugh, and feel seen.
Over time, he gave out more than half a million hugs across continents. His mission wasn’t just about fun. He wanted to bring comfort and healing to people, no matter where they lived or what language they spoke. By sharing these small gestures, he reminded others that kindness doesn’t need words.
In 2021, Sylvester decided it was time to turn this mission into a movement. He launched National Hug & High 5 Day to help everyone join the wave of connection. One kind touch at a time, the world could feel a little less distant—and a lot more human.
