Supporting thousands of coat drives all over the nation, the day promotes a sense of community coming together to support each other – all while promoting circularity and the reduction of textile waste.
It’s a great cause, and this is a great time to get connected through National Share the Warmth Day!
How to Celebrate National Share the Warmth Day
Support the Cause
Whether donating a gently used coat, making a financial contribution to the organization, or volunteering your time for a coat drive, it’s exciting to get involved with National Share the Warmth Day.
Don’t have a One Warm Coat drive in your area? That’s okay! This is a great time to start one, whether at a local school, community center, library or some other accessible space.
You can gather freshly laundered coats from those who no longer need them. Then partner with a local shelter or foster care organization to help distribute them to those in need.
Share the Warmth
While it’s true that this day is about donating coats, it can certainly be about more than that as well. After all, sharing goodwill and kindness is also a way to promote a better planet. Get creative on ways to share warmth on this day!
For instance, buy a cup of coffee for the person behind you in line, in the spirit of Pay It Forward Day.
Volunteer at a soup kitchen to share food with folks who might be having a hard time. Take a meal to an elderly neighbor or a frazzled mom who could use a break.
It doesn’t take much to think of all sorts of ways to share good vibes with others.

History of National Share the Warmth Day
This event can trace its background to 1992 when it started with a single coat drive. The One Warm Coat non-profit organization was founded in San Francisco that same year by Lois Pavlow.
As the name implies, the organization literally started with just one coat that inspired a coat drive after Thanksgiving.
Over the years, the event has turned into something remarkable and generous, growing into a national non-profit.
Not only does the organization provide coats for children and adults who need them, but it also promotes volunteerism along with environmental sustainability.
This day of action and awareness is dedicated to making sure everyone has access to the warmth, comfort and protection they need to thrive.
