World Misophonia Awareness Day
A disorder that is only recently coming to the forefront of conversation in the psychological and medical fields, misophonia is often misunderstood and widely underdiagnosed.
While many people experience distress from triggers related to this auditory condition, lack of awareness continues to be a significant problem.
Help improve community education and promote knowledge about this condition by celebrating World Misophonia Awareness Day!
How to Celebrate World Misophonia Awareness Day
Learn More About Misophonia
One important thing to do in honor of World Misophonia Awareness Day is to get more educated regarding this unique neurophysiological disorder.
- A person with this disorder has decreased tolerance for certain sounds as well as the stimuli that accompanies those sounds (for example, loud chewing)
- When an affected person experiences this stimuli, their distress and behaviors are much stronger than what is seen in most other people
- Misophonia causes an involuntary physical reaction which can be overwhelming to the affected person
- Misophonia is not simply about preferences but it is a legitimate disorder
Be Supportive
Know someone who struggles with misophonia? World Misophonia Awareness Day is a great time to be more attentive to the needs of this friend, family member, coworker or other person in your life.
People who have misophonia find that it may impact their work, school, relationships and other parts of life. It can cause a great deal of suffering and may even be a disability for some people.
Because of the impact, people with misophonia may find themselves feeling isolated and alone, perhaps even feeling frustrated or hopeless.
Show support and respect by asking your affected friend or family member what ways you can best help.
Share Your Story
One of the important purposes of World Misophonia Awareness Day is to destigmatize this disorder by bringing it to the fore of conversation.
If you have misophonia, perhaps you would consider sharing something about your story on this day – break the silence and encourage others with your own story.
Host an Awareness Event
Those who work in education, mental health or some other related sector may be interested in celebrating World Misophonia Awareness Day by hosting an event.
Invite an expert to speak on the subject and then encourage co-workers, professionals or other community members to attend.
Or, try a round-table discussion time where several experts can gather, whether in person or online, to promote more conversation around the topic.
History of World Misophonia Awareness Day
This event was started in 2025, founded with the purpose of raising awareness about this neurophysiological disorder.
The founders of the day, soQuiet, are a non-profit organization that advocates for those who have misophonia. World Misophonia Awareness Day encourages groups, individuals, healthcare professionals and communities to improve education and support around this complicated condition.
A fairly recent term in the psychological field, “misophonia” was coined by doctor and author Pawel Jastreboff in the early 2000s.
Although the term is newer, the description of the condition is a phenomenon that has been described in audiology and psychology studies since at least the 20th century.
World Misophonia Day takes place on July 9, in honor of Michelle Del Valle, who passed away from suicide at age 17 after struggling with misophonia for four years of your short life.
