History of Comic Con
Comic-Con began in 1970 as a small gathering in San Diego. Shel Dorf, a comic book fan and writer, led the effort. He teamed up with a group of friends, including Richard Alf, Ken Krueger, and Mike Towry.
Together, they planned a one-day event called Golden State Comic-Minicon. It was held in a hotel basement and drew around 300 people.
That first meeting focused on comics, science fiction, and film. It set the stage for something much bigger.
The group soon organized a longer event later that same year. That second gathering became known as San Diego Comic-Con. It quickly attracted artists, writers, and fans from across the country. Through the 1970s and 1980s, the convention kept growing.
It moved to different venues around the city before settling at the San Diego Convention Center in 1991. By the mid-1990s, organizers renamed it Comic-Con International.
What started as a local fan event turned into one of the largest pop culture conventions in the world. Today, Comic-Con draws well over 130,000 people every year.
Fans come not just for comics but for film, games, animation, and TV. The event now shapes entertainment trends and creates space for fans and creators to connect.
