California earned the nickname “Golden State” during the Gold Rush of 1849 when prospectors flocked to its hills in search of fortune. The term also reflects the state’s golden poppies and sunsets.

In 1846, American settlers in Sonoma raised a homemade flag featuring a grizzly bear and a star, declaring the “California Republic.” This Bear Flag inspired the design of the current state flag.
