History of National Connecticut Day

Connecticut is known to be one of the 13 American territories that initiated self-governance in the year 1637. On January 9, 1788, Connecticut officially became a state and officially adopted the U.S. Constitution. It was at this time that Connecticut was designated as the country’s 5th state.
The Dutch were the first to explore Connecticut and establish trading posts. Puritans from Massachusetts established the first permanent settlement in the year 1633. Jonathan Trumbull, the colonial governor of Connecticut, is credited with being the only governor to favor independence.
Adriaen Block, a Dutch explorer, was the first European to reach Connecticut. He was able to complete four successful voyages and drew a detailed map of the area.
