October 19 is a fine night to turn one familiar mixed drink into a hands-on tasting. International Gin and Tonic Day starts with a classic: gin, tonic, plenty of fresh lime and a dash of bitters.

Mac and cheese, PB and J, Pickles and Rye…Gin and Tonic is a classic combination beloved by all. Mix them together, add some lime, and feel the refreshment.
Make the mixing part of the fun rather than disappearing into the kitchen. Set out a few gin and tonic combinations and compare them side by side. A flavored or herbal gin might take the drink somewhere unexpected, while the lime and bitters keep the classic version bright. You do not need to deliver a lecture on botanicals. A simple “that one wins” is perfectly respectable tasting commentary.
Give the classic a little cinematic flair with a Kingston Harbour-style glass, made with tonic, Angostura bitters and a whole fresh lime. That is enough citrus to make one lonely garnish wedge look as though it missed an important meeting.
If you would rather leave the bottles and cleanup to somebody else, book a gin tasting or stop by a distillery. A bar event with music and snacks turns the drink into an outing without making the evening formal. Pick the version you would order again, raise the winning glass and let October 19 end with plenty of lime on the table.
