Your guide to celebrating December 9
Skip to all 9 daysTurn up the beat before you turn on the oven. December 9 gets a lively soundtrack from World Techno Day, so queue up a techno playlist and clear enough kitchen floor for a little dancing between baking tasks. A wooden spoon makes a perfectly respectable pretend microphone.
The main event is National Pastry Day. You could visit a local bakery for a cinnamon roll or apple turnover, but a homemade pie crust turns the kitchen into part of the celebration. Keep the butter and water cold, handle the dough lightly, and aim for flaky rather than flawless. Pastry is very forgiving once it smells wonderful.

From filo to puff, Danish to baklava, savor flaky, buttery treats from your local bakery or attend a pastry-making class to learn from the pros.

Give that crust a seasonal filling for National Opal Apples Day. Bake the sweet-tangy apples into a pie or tart, then set aside a few slices for snacking while you wait. Their flesh resists browning, which is handy when the music distracts you from the cutting board.

While the pastry bakes, spread paper, glitter, and glue across the table for Christmas Card Day. Make a card by hand and add a personal seasonal message for someone you care about. If the recipient lives far away, a personalized photo card or e-card can cross the miles without trusting glitter to an envelope.

Share the finished pastry with friends, neighbors, or coworkers, and mail or send the cards before the techno playlist loops back to track one. Crumbs on the craft table are practically guaranteed, but at least the apple filling stays in the tart.
