History of the Flower Fair
The Flower Fair in MedellÃn began in 1957, sparked by the vision of Arturo Uribe, a member of the local tourism board. Uribe wanted to highlight the region’s rich floral heritage and create an event that would attract visitors to the city.
The first fair was a modest affair, lasting only five days. It featured a small parade of 40 “Silleteros,” local farmers who carried beautiful flower arrangements on their backs.
As the years passed, the Flower Fair grew in both size and popularity. The event became an annual tradition, deeply ingrained in the culture of MedellÃn. What started as a small, local celebration transformed into a ten-day festival that now draws thousands of visitors from around the world.
The “Silleteros” parade remains the centerpiece of the fair, with participants crafting intricate floral designs that captivate spectators.
Alongside the parade, the fair includes music, dancing, and various cultural events. These performances make it one of Colombia’s most cherished and vibrant celebrations.
