The Flower Fair, or Feria de las Flores, in Colombia, is a dazzling celebration that fills the city of Medellín with vibrant colors and fragrant blooms. Every year, this event transforms the city into a living garden, with streets lined with elaborate flower arrangements and cheerful parades.

The heart of the fair is the “Silleteros” parade, where locals carry intricate floral displays on their backs, showcasing their creativity and deep connection to the land. This tradition, rooted in the region’s history, draws people from all over to witness the stunning artistry of these floral creations.

Beyond the visual splendor, the Flower Fair represents the spirit and pride of Medellín. It’s a time when the city comes alive with music, dance, and community events, bringing together people of all ages to celebrate.

The fair also highlights the importance of flowers in the local culture, not just as a symbol of beauty but as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the farmers who cultivate them.

For both residents and visitors, the Flower Fair is a joyful reminder of the region’s natural bounty and the enduring traditions that make Medellín a unique and vibrant city.

History of the Flower Fair

The Flower Fair in Medellín began in 1957, sparked by the vision of Arturo Uribe, a member of the local tourism board. Uribe wanted to highlight the region’s rich floral heritage and create an event that would attract visitors to the city.

The first fair was a modest affair, lasting only five days. It featured a small parade of 40 “Silleteros,” local farmers who carried beautiful flower arrangements on their backs.

As the years passed, the Flower Fair grew in both size and popularity. The event became an annual tradition, deeply ingrained in the culture of Medellín. What started as a small, local celebration transformed into a ten-day festival that now draws thousands of visitors from around the world.

The “Silleteros” parade remains the centerpiece of the fair, with participants crafting intricate floral designs that captivate spectators.

Alongside the parade, the fair includes music, dancing, and various cultural events. These performances make it one of Colombia’s most cherished and vibrant celebrations.
