November Holidays

Your guide to celebrating November

National Cinnamon Day starts November’s kitchen countdown. Keep the oven warm through homemade bread and stuffing, then bring it all to the Thanksgiving table.

November starts in the spice cabinet and ends around a crowded table. The big destination is Thanksgiving on November 26, when turkey, stuffing and pie give everyone a reason to gather. Add gratitude to the meal by asking each person to share something they appreciate, and consider setting aside a food-bank donation before the feast begins.

Thanksgiving

Turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie! A time to be around the ones you love, give thanks, and celebrate the blessings in our lives.

The countdown gets fragrant on November 1 with National Cinnamon Day. Stir cinnamon into oatmeal for an easy start, then bake it into apple or pumpkin bread. That first warm loaf is also a useful rehearsal for all the mixing, waiting and sampling ahead.

On November 17, National Homemade Bread Day moves the project from practice to flour-dusted action. Knead a simple yeast loaf with someone, keep an eye on the rising dough, and share it warm with butter. Save a few pieces if you can. They have another appointment.

Those slices can inspire a trial run for National Stuffing Day on November 21. Test a bread-based version with onion, garlic, herbs and sage, then decide whether apple deserves a place in the final batch. A test pan also means leftovers, ready for a turkey-and-cranberry sandwich.

November 21 has room for dessert prep, too. For National Gingerbread Cookie Day, roll and cut seasonal shapes, then set out frosting and sprinkles for a relaxed decorating contest. Make an extra batch for neighbors, teachers or coworkers. Crooked icing only makes the handoff more charming.

Once November 26 arrives, bring the tested stuffing to the Thanksgiving table and start a tradition worth repeating, perhaps a family football game or an annual pie-making session. After a month of cinnamon, rising dough and cookie crumbs, passing the pie feels like the proper finale.
