September Holidays

Your guide to celebrating September

Give your orange tabby some undivided attention for Ginger Cat Appreciation Day on September 1, then write a real letter by hand for World Letter Writing Day.

September 1 brings 19 national days, led by Ginger Cat Appreciation Day, with World Letter Writing Day and National Tofu Day (UK) offering a gentle reason to stay in and make time for small kindnesses.

Animals

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day

Though they have a reputation for being total doofuses, ginger cats are actually—wait no, that’s right. Give your ginger doofus a big hug and some cat treats.

Start with your resident ginger

Give your orange tabby a little undivided attention before the day gets busy. Put five or ten minutes aside for the game they actually enjoy: drag a wand toy slowly along the floor, toss a soft mouse down a hallway, or scatter a few pieces of dry food in a folded towel for a simple hunt. Refresh the water bowl, brush them if they welcome it, and make a quick check that their favorite sleeping spot is clean and comfortable. If you have been thinking about adding a cat to the household, use the day to browse a local shelter’s listings and talk through the commitment with everyone at home.

Write one note worth keeping

After breakfast, pull out a pen, a blank card, and an address. Choose one person who would appreciate something more lasting than a quick message, then write six to ten sentences: a specific memory, one quality you admire, and a closing that asks nothing in return. Keep it plain and personal. Address and stamp the envelope before you put the supplies away, then drop it in a mailbox on your next errand. A note to a grandparent, former teacher, or old friend is a good place to begin.

Hobbies & Activities

World Letter Writing Day

Ditch the tech and reconnect the old-fashioned way. Write a letter to a family member, old friend, your significant other, or try finding a new pen pal.

Make tofu the easy dinner

For a low-effort meal, press a block of firm tofu between paper towels for 15 minutes, cube it, then pan-fry it in a tablespoon of oil until the edges are crisp. Add a sauce made from two tablespoons soy sauce, one tablespoon maple syrup or honey, and a little grated ginger or garlic. Serve it over microwave rice with frozen broccoli, peas, or whatever vegetables need using up. The whole thing takes about 30 minutes, including prep, and leaves room for an unhurried evening.

Food & Drink

National Tofu Day (UK)

Try a healthier, often more eco-friendly option in your meals instead of meat. Try tofu stir-fry, tofu in taco bowls, or even a sweet, moist tofu-based dessert.

Leave room for your own face

Acne Positivity Day is a useful prompt to step away from picking and harsh experiments. Wash gently, use the products that already suit your skin, and skip the close-up inspection in bright bathroom light. Put the energy into something more restorative: change your pillowcase, make tea, or read the letter you wrote aloud once before sending it. September 1 does not need a makeover to feel cared for.
